What If Your Glucose Numbers Told More Than Hemoglobin A1c? Time-in-range from continuous monitors explains day-to-day control.

People with diabetes often judge control by a single lab number, and that can feel both reassuring and oddly incomplete — like hearing an album’s average volume instead of the song. For everyday life, knowing how often your sugar is in a safe band matters more than a single long-term average.

Why this matters now

Researchers and guideline groups are talking more about “time in range” — the percent of the day a person’s glucose stays in a target window — because it captures daily highs, lows, and swings that hemoglobin A1c (the 3‑month average blood‑sugar test) can miss. A pooled review of paired A1c and time‑in‑range data (1,137 paired measurements) found a strong correlation: a 10% change in time in range corresponds to about a 0.8% change in A1c, helping translate one metric into the other for patients and clinicians.

What “time in range” tells you that A1c does not

Time in range (usually defined as glucose between about 70–180 mg/dL) shows: - How often daily highs or lows occur. - Whether overnight or after‑meal spikes are a problem. - Short-term response to diet, new meds, or activity. A recent narrative review examined over 100 papers (including many randomized trials) and argues time in range is a practical, patient-focused outcome for type 2 diabetes research and care. That means clinicians and patients can use sensor data to set clearer daily goals.

What this means for someone with prediabetes or diabetes

CDC screening guidance still uses hemoglobin A1c thresholds to detect prediabetes (A1c 5.7–6.4%) and diabetes (A1c ≥6.5%), so A1c remains essential for diagnosis. But after diagnosis — especially when a person uses a continuous glucose monitor (a small sensor that checks glucose many times per day) — tracking time in range gives actionable feedback to reduce high sugar episodes and prevent low sugar episodes.
