What If You Knew When ALS Would Start? A New Study Says We're Getting Closer

Imagine carrying a gene that puts you at risk for ALS — but having no idea if, or when, symptoms might actually begin. That uncertainty has long been one of the hardest parts of living with a hereditary risk for this disease. Scientists Can Now Predict When ALS Symptoms Will Strike — Sometimes Years in Advance.

New Research:

A new study published in Nature Medicine on July 27, 2026 offers real hope for changing that. Researchers tracked over 500 blood samples from people at different stages — some already diagnosed with ALS, some carrying the gene but symptom-free, and others with no genetic risk at all. By analyzing a specific group of 19 proteins in the blood, they found they could predict, with impressive accuracy, when a person carrying the ALS gene was likely to start developing symptoms — sometimes years before it happened, with an average margin of error of only about a year and a half.

For families living with ALS in their genes, this kind of early warning could someday mean earlier treatment, better-timed clinical trial enrollment, and more informed conversations with doctors — turning fear of the unknown into a plan.
