What if a fungus hides in your hair follicles? New lab work shows how Candida auris uses chitin to persist on skin.

A pimple that won’t go away or an itchy patch on your scalp can feel personal — and a little mysterious. New lab research helps explain one reason why some fungal germs, especially Candida auris, can silently live on skin for months without causing obvious illness.

What the research found

Researchers reported that Candida auris — a drug-resistant yeast that can spread in healthcare settings — exposes more chitin (a hard shell-like sugar on the fungal surface) and settles into hair follicles. Instead of triggering the usual antifungal response, this pattern provokes a different immune signal called interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). IFN-γ then changes how nearby skin cells behave, reducing barrier and antimicrobial defenses and allowing the fungus to persist.

Why this matters for patients and clinics

Because C. auris can live on skin without causing fever or a sore, it can spread between people and later cause serious bloodstream infections. The new finding helps explain: - how hair follicles become a protective niche for the fungus, - why some infections resist clearance even when standard antifungals are used, - and why infection-control measures (cleaning skin and environment) are still crucial.
